FROM THE ARTIST

Everyone knows the colourful poles lining the canals of Venice but few know their history. Traditionally they were in front of palazzo with oil lamps on the top to guide guests at night. They are painted in the colours of the family living there. I became quite addicted to looking for different colours and designs, and loved how they were maintained so well compared to the buildings they announced. I was drawn to this particular one as the pole proudly stood in front of an unkept building in such stark contrast. However I'm sure if one was to be invited to a glimpse within a different story would be told. These buildings often hide an inner age and splendour. That's the mystery I hope I have painted.
